Going out for coffee is a luxury that few can afford every day, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a delicious cup of coffee every morning. A little care and consideration into your coffee experience will transform your morning cup and heighten your day.
Over the years, our roasters have learned that brewing great coffee is a peculiar art. The good news is that anyone can master it! We’re giving away a few of our trade secrets to transform the way you brew and improve your coffee experience.
1. Water Quality
A high-quality cup of coffee requires high-quality water. The pure properties of filtered water produce a delicious and smooth cup of coffee, while low-quality water can enhance acidic and bitter tastes.
Harsh chemicals slip through our filtration systems and these minerals and chemicals affect the quality of our coffee. If you have the means, inexpensive water filters, like Brita filters, can help sift out any contaminants that will affect the taste of your water.
If you really want to transform your water quality, reverse osmosis is an excellent process that improves water quality and cleanses your water of harsh contaminants. By pushing water through a minimum of three filters in a reverse osmosis system, city water becomes filtered, pure water. This ensures that the water coming out of your faucet and filling your coffee pot contains zero contaminants.
Brewing coffee at the right temperature is an important component in improving how you experience coffee.
High temperatures help to extract flavor from the coffee grounds meaning you get a better tasting cup of coffee. Suggested temperatures for brewing coffee are between 195°F to 205°F.
Don’t worry, we’re not suggesting you hang around the coffee pot with a thermometer. Most coffee machines are programmable which allows you the opportunity to easily set certain temperatures.
If you don’t have a coffee machine, or you’re committed to your french press, you might consider buying a control kettle.
Control kettles are electric kettle pots with built-in thermometers that allow you to control the temperature of your water. Not only do they bring a flair of style to your countertop, but stainless steel control kettle pots are super durable and can easily last for several years!
Our final tip depends on what method you’re using to brew your coffee. If you’re using a French Press, we implore you to be patient.
While there are many brewing methods, the French press remains a favorite for good reason. It results in a great cup of coffee and is simple for coffee novices. Not allowing the coffee to steep long enough is the most common mistake among French press coffee drinkers.
You may be quick to take the plunge and start sipping your coffee, but before you do, wait the desired time. The recommended steep time for French pressed coffee is usually four minutes. Allow your coffee to reach its full flavor potential before pouring a cup. Trust us, you’ll thank us for it.
